Ulipristal acetate is a non-hormonal medication used to treat heavy periods and pressure symptoms caused by fibroid uterus in pre-menopausal women. It has been shown to significantly reduce menstrual bleeding and also the size of fibroids.
It is commonly used as a preoperative treatment to reduce the size of fibroids prior to surgery, and to alleviate symptoms while awaiting surgery.
It is used in a daily dose of 5 mgs. However, it is not licenced for long term use and can be used for up to 2 years as intermittent 3 monthly regime.
The side effects of ulipristal acetate include (but not limited to) headaches, abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness, tiredness, hot flushes and breast tenderness. It is not recommended for use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Non-hormonal contraception is recommended during treatment, as the effect of the drug on a growing fetus is unknown.
